(1824-1903) US writer, best-known during his lifetime by his pseudonym Hans Breitmann, under which, beginning in 1857 with the famous "Hans Breitmann's Barty", he wrote large amounts of comic verse in German-US dialect. His fantasy, all under his own name, included: Johnnykin and the Goblins (1876), in which Johnnykin gains artistic success through his kindness to the Goblins; Arcadia: The Gospel of the Witches (1899), which presents some of his own poetry as genuinely transmitted from an ancient Witch cult; and Flaxius: Leaves from the Life of an Immortal (coll of linked stories 1902) – Flaxius is an Etruscan Magician granted Immortality by a Fairy and who tells various anecdotes as he travels up through the centuries, eventually to reach the future.
