(1953-    ) US author of a series beginning with The Steerswoman (1989) and The Outskirter's Secret (1992). Kirstein employs the familiar format of a Quest to explore epistemology, responsibility and cultural assimilation. The protagonist, the "steerswoman" Rowan, is a purveyor and disseminator of knowledge to the varied cultures of a Secondary World (in fact, a post-Holocaust one). The novels chart her need to confront and deal with problems which arise when knowledge is hidden, exploited or perverted, as well as wider issues surrounding the nature of knowledge itself, and the responsibilities incumbent upon those who possess it. Kirstein used the byline R R Kirstein for her first story, "Act Naturally" (1982 Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine), but in fact has no middle initial. [KLM]
