Joan of Arc

Tagged: Film.

(?1412-1431) French national heroine, created a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 1920. The Church required, before her canonization could be authorized, that Miracles be authentically ascribed to her; but it is not for this reason that she is of note here. Her cross-dressing valour as a national symbol of resistance, and her ability to "hear" voices, makes her an Underlier figure for the female heroine (see Gender; Gender Disguise), though not for the Temporal Adventuress. Saint Joan (1924) by George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) places her briefly in the Afterlife; and movies like Carl Theodor Dreyer's La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928) similarly make metaphysical capital out of her short life.
