(1945-    ) UK academic and writer whose fiction, mostly YA, includes fantasies like The Map of Time (1983), and Sue and the Honey Machine (1989) and Fay Cow and the Missing Milk (1989), the latter two assembled as Fay Cow and the Honey Machine (omni 1992). He is perhaps better known for academic works in the field of children's literature, including Children's Book Research in Britain (1977; rev 1982), Criticism, Theory, and Children's Literature (1991) and An Introduction to Children's Literature (1994).
