(1958-    ) UK illustrator and painter, mainly of archaeological subjects, with a strongly coloured realistic style. Gurney's first professional job was as a background artist on the animated movie Fire and Ice (1983). A deep interest in archaeology drew commissions from the National Geographical Society to paint reconstructions of Etruscan, Moshe and Kushite cultures. A 1990 print entitled "Dinosaur Parade" led to his writing and illustrating the fantasy Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time (graph 1992), followed by Dinotopia: The World Beneath (graph 1995). These tell of a Darwinian voyage of exploration by a professor and his family, from which they never return, having become immersed in the life of a fantastical world in which Dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts feature. Other work: Dinotopia Pop-up Book * (graph 1994).
