Goldberg, Rube
Tagged: Artist.
Working name of US cartoonist Reuben Lucius Goldberg (1883-1970), who gave his name to the National Cartoonists Society's award, the Reuben, which he designed. He also added his name to the language (as in "Rube Goldberg contraption") for the many fanciful, gravity-defying, spoof mechanical contraptions he invented. His drawing had a beguiling simplicity, but was firmly constructed and executed in a strong, flexible line. [RT]
