(1854-1925) Irish caricaturist and illustrator, in the UK from 1873. His only fantasy book, How Smilestown Became Glumstown: A Simple Story Told in Sketches (graph circa 1920), describes the effects on England when alcohol is prohibited and a fake Elixir takes its place. Books illustrated by Furniss include: F M Allen's Brayhard (1890); Lewis Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893); Travels in the Interior (1887) by L T Courtenay; G E Farrow's The Wallypug of Why (1895) and The Wallypug Book (1905); and Edward Abbott Parry's Gamble Gold (1907). Much of Furniss's work appeared in Punch during 1873-1894; his witty, fluent hyperbolic drawings soon became famous. [JC]
