Field, Rachel

Tagged: Author.

(1894-1942) US writer primarily noted for realistic adult and children's novels, though she made one noteworthy contribution to fantasy – Hitty, Her First Hundred Years (1929), the memoirs of a sentient (though immobile) Doll – for which she became the first woman to win the Newbery Medal for Children's Literature. Happy with her existence, Hitty is a singular example of a doll who does not want to be human (see Real Boy), and her story provides interesting commentary on the joys and liabilities of Immortality.
