Tagged: Author.
(1651-1715) French cleric and writer, whose Les aventures de Télémaque (1699; trans I Littlebury as The Adventures of Telemachus 1699 UK; preferred trans John Hawkesworth 1768 UK) carries the son of Odysseus on a journey through a Greece (conceived on Pastoral lines as a Golden Age) in a search for his lost father. The goddess Minerva accompanies him, cross-dressed as a wise, male Mentor (see Gender Disguise). At least two Utopias are encountered: one, the Kingdom of Salente, features a colour-coded paternalism (see Colour-Coding); the second, La Bétique, is pure pastoral. [JC]
