(1931-2015) US writer best known for Ragtime (1975), one of a series of novels which attempts to recreate the US past in terms which float – at times uneasily – between Alternate-World devices and Magic Realism. This was filmed in 1981. Most of Doctorow's fiction remains, despite hints of an upwelling otherness, within the mundane world. Exceptions include Big as Life (1966), which depicts the effects of a sudden unexplained irruption of Giants. The Waterworks (1994), set like Ragtime in the myth-engendering US past, is a Gaslight Romance in which a mad scientist has learnt how to confer Immortality, but at terrible cost. [JC]
