(1963- ) US writer. Much of his work has been sf, though his first story of genre interest – "Vernon's Dragon" for 100 Great Fantasy Short-Short Stories (anth 1984) ed Isaac Asimov, Terry Carr and Martin H Greenberg – was fantasy. Rogue Pirate (1987) is a fantasy adventure. The Blind Archer (1988), in which a young mortal must learn to do Magic according to the strict precepts of the eponymous God, is set in the same fantasy City featured in Slab's Tavern and Other Uncanny Places (coll 1991 chap), a volume containing some Club Stories. In 1988 Betancourt co-edited with George H Scithers (1929-2010) and Darrell Schweitzer several issues of a revived Weird Tales. He also edited The Ultimate Frankenstein (anth 1991) with Byron Preiss.
